*Let's Talk Real & Raw: Postpartum

Today I want to get real and raw with y’all. Postpartum depression, what is postpartum and why is this such an important topic to discuss?

Postpartum depression is a depression that occurs after childbirth, those who develop postpartum depression are at a greater risk of developing major depression later in life. If we shed light on PPD and are more aware and open about it it can become easier to ask for help and recognize the signs.

Symptoms can be insomnia, loss of appetite, intense irritability, and difficulty bonding with your baby. Yeah no, thank you!

Many mothers who go through postpartum feel ashamed to be feeling this way and tend to not ask for help, afraid of judgment from others. I’m here to tell you, along with many others, that I hear and see you and am judgment-free.

What if you aren’t feeling depressed, are there other perinatal mental health reactions or disorders? Short answer, yes. 1-7 women experience significant depression, anxiety, intrusive repetitive thoughts, panic, or post-traumatic stress. Others experience bipolar depression. Reactions like these can also occur with miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth, or infant loss. The least common reaction is postpartum psychosis, which occurs after 1 or 2 per thousand births.

With how the world is today mental health is even more important to keep an eye on. Here are some things that help me and have helped others to keep you sane and safe in your home. A nice walk around the block is great to get fresh air and have a moment of clarity to think and spend time with your loved ones, watch movies and videos that are happy and comedic to keep your spirits up, and maybe even try picking up that hobby you always wanted to do, but never really had time for.

Developing postpartum or any other disorders/reactions are NOT your fault, you did NOT do anything to get this.
